How scary is too scary? Bret and Kate discuss the “so scary its Rated R” horror flick The Conjuring in an attempt to see what works about the genre. Fortunately, The Conjuring gives us plenty of material to dissect, from its top notch filmmaking, scary scenes, and absolute thrill ride of an ending. Does the movie posses us into more over hyping? Or does its imaginary friends frighten the characters and not the audience?

Yes, the MPAA is getting a lot of negative criticisms over The Conjuring! Implied violent summer blockbusters like The Lone Ranger and Man of Steel get a PG-13 while ultra violent gore fests like Evil Dead stretch the limits of R. When it comes to haunting/possesion movies though, the undeniable classic The Exorcist truly earns an R rating for both horror and vulgarity. Here’s a sample:
