It’s always fun to root for good, hardcore sci-fi that is also entertainingly accessible. Finding a movie that strikes that perfect balance is rare, but oh so rewarding. Unfortunately, Elysium trades in entertainment for extreme overt political messages that muck up the otherwise basic story. Yet both Kate and Bret find plenty of tiny moments of innovation and imagination in the gritty world writer/director Neill Blomkamp paints. Find out what worked and what was missing (hint: ‘robots blowing up’ for the former and ‘more robots blowing up’ for the latter).
We’re not so sure Elysium will be remade one day, but mech/robot suits will be around for a long time. In fact, even Robocop is getting an upgrade, complete with a new trailer that just launched recently. While the original can be a bit cheesy, the ultra-violence and power of Murphy as The Robocop really showcase the unification of man and machine. Here’s a sample:
