(Episode 122 of) Cinema Smackdown – Need For Speed

Cinema Smackdown
By Bret Dorman and Kate Peterson

This week, Kate and Bret sit in the back seat and let the silliness of Need For Speed take them for a thrill ride. We differ a bit on the tone of the movie, which even though it can be ridiculous at times, isn’t as ridiculously over the top as some of the other car based movies in past summer line ups (aka The Fast Franchise). However, we do agree that the “comedic relief” elements could have been left on the chopping room floor and Aaron Paul gives a fantastic performance. Hear some of the problems and maybe how we would fix them ourselves, while admiring the race scenes for what they are, a fun time!

When it comes to car movies, sometimes smaller is better. Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry is familiar with a lt of Top 10 Best Car Chase Movie lists and a clear influence on the second half of the Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino Grindhouse inspired double feature. Like with Need For Speed, the best car stunts are the most practical kind and this movie has plenty of that. They story may be just as thin, but the characters are a bit wackier and the plot points more functional. Take a look:

Next Episode will be Muppets Most Wanted!
